Frequently asked questions
Does this Base64 tool support emoji and non-English text?
Yes. Text is converted to UTF-8 bytes before encoding and decoded strictly as UTF-8, so accents, Chinese, Arabic and emoji round-trip correctly — unlike the browser’s plain btoa(), which fails on non-Latin characters.
What is URL-safe Base64?
URL-safe Base64 (RFC 4648 §5) replaces "+" with "-" and "/" with "_" and drops the "=" padding, so the string can be used in URLs, file names and JWTs without escaping. The decoder accepts both alphabets automatically.
Why does my Base64 decode to "binary data"?
If the decoded bytes are not valid UTF-8 text, the data is probably a file such as an image, PDF or ZIP. The tool detects common formats and lets you download the decoded file instead of showing garbled characters.
Is Base64 encryption?
No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption — anyone can decode it. It makes binary data safe to embed in text formats like JSON, HTML, CSS and email. Use real encryption for anything secret.
