Hash Generator
Generate MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hashes of text or files at once, with optional HMAC using a secret key.
Runs in your browser — your data never leaves your deviceText is hashed as UTF-8 bytes, exactly as typed (no trailing newline).

How to use Hash Generator
- 1
Enter text or pick a file
Type or paste text, or choose a file to compute its checksum.
- 2
Optionally add a key
Turn on HMAC and enter a secret key to get keyed SHA hashes.
- 3
Copy the hash
All algorithms are shown at once — toggle uppercase and copy any value.
Frequently asked questions
Which hash algorithm should I use?
Use SHA-256 for most purposes — file integrity, API signatures and checksums. MD5 and SHA-1 are fast and still common for download checksums, but they are broken for security and should not be used for signatures or certificates.
Can I use this to hash passwords?
No. Plain MD5 or SHA hashes are far too fast for password storage. Use a dedicated slow algorithm such as Argon2, bcrypt or scrypt with a unique salt on your server.
What is HMAC?
HMAC (hash-based message authentication code) mixes a secret key into the hash. Only someone with the same key can produce the same value, so it is used to sign webhooks and API requests — for example HMAC-SHA256 for Stripe or GitHub webhook signatures.
Why doesn’t my hash match the one from the command line?
Hashes change with every byte. Commands like echo add a trailing newline, and Windows files may use CRLF line endings. This tool hashes your text exactly as typed in UTF-8; hash the file itself to match sha256sum or certutil output.
