Frequently asked questions
What is a Base64 image / data URI?
A data URI embeds the image bytes directly in text, like data:image/png;base64,iVBOR… You can paste it into HTML, CSS or Markdown and the image displays without a separate file request.
Why is the Base64 version bigger than my file?
Base64 represents every 3 bytes with 4 text characters, so encoded images are about 33% larger. Gzip/Brotli on your server recovers part of that.
When should I inline images as Base64?
It’s ideal for small icons, logos and email templates (under ~10 KB) where saving an HTTP request matters. For large photos, linking a normal image file is faster and caches better.
Are my images uploaded?
No — encoding happens in your browser with the FileReader API. Nothing is sent to a server.
