Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Compression happens entirely in your browser using the HTML canvas, so your photos never leave your device and it works even offline once the page has loaded.

What quality setting should I use?

For photos, 70–80% is usually indistinguishable from the original while saving 50–80% of the size. Go lower for thumbnails, higher for images with fine text or sharp edges.

Why did my PNG barely get smaller?

PNG is a lossless format, so the quality slider has little effect. Converting to WebP (keeps transparency) or JPG, or setting a max width, gives much bigger savings. If the result would be larger, we keep your original file.

Is the photo metadata (EXIF) kept?

Re-encoded images drop EXIF data such as camera details and GPS location, which also helps privacy and saves a few extra kilobytes.
